"There really isn't much need for people to memorize and recite...don't waste your time..."
This guy makes a whole lot of sense. And now I want to kick Barbri in the nuts.
It is not as though Barbri has ever preached "memorization," but the paced program, the checklists, the outlines, and the substantive lectures all certainly imply that memorization is the most important. I mean, how many mnemonic devices does one bar exam need?
One thing was on my mind this morning at 2 a.m. when I could not sleep...where is Barbri's published success rate? I could not find it on their website or in a google search.

Interesting.
ReplyDeleteI came across this guy last week and have since watched his "16 days before" and then "12 days before." I like him. I think his message here is helpful but maybe a bit dangerous? I don't know. Memorization is certainly important - all the application of facts in the world will not let you pass the bar if you don't know what law to apply.
Where are you spending your focus on the next few days? MBE, essays? I miss the days of law school where we often had a couple days before each exam. You could cram in those days and then purge. But here - there's no room for cramming & purging since it's all tested together.
I'm curious to hear your study plan. I've been focusing heavily on the essay topics the last few days - in Texas we have 12 essays. It's a bit different from CA because we don't do essays for evidence, contracts, civ pro, etc. It's random stuff - secured transactions, commercial paper, business associations, family law, oil and gas, etc, etc. The only carry-over MBE topic is property. And those essays are ridiculous. There's so much to know for property and so much they can ask in an essay.
I think I'll probably dedicate at least 1-2 more days to the MBE but I don't think that's where I'll pull too many extra points since I generally am not a good MC taker.
I don't know! All the sudden it's HERE!
I know...I like this guy too but I agree -- the memorization is important in order to be able to analyze.
ReplyDeleteI'm focusing on essays, and doing one more simulated MBE (half day only). That's it. I'm just writing essays over and over again.
I'm pretty scared. Our pass rate is so low, that I'm just terrified I'm going to fall on the wrong side of the equation.
Oil & gas? Commercial paper? Yikes. 12 essays? That sounds horrid. Is it a 3 day test as well? I'm definitely spending more time with the 6 subjects tested on the essays and MBE. But I'm not taking Barbri's MBE crap too seriously at this point. Anything over 50% and I'm happy.
I think I'm going to freak out every day from here on out.
